According to WCVB-TV, we are experiencing one of the warmest winters ever recorded in the Greater Boston Area.
It does appear to be true as we are noticing that many of our spring bulbs, such as the Snowdrops and Crocus, are emerging and flowering earlier than usual. And the Daffodil stems are about three to four inches high.
On Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow, which we’re told, means that he predicts an early Spring.
Interestingly, we’ve come across a ladybug in our kitchen and a couple of flies were recently hovering over our television screen. I’m guessing that they flew in when the kitchen door was open.
I’m sure there will be some snow in our future. I’m glad because every year around this time I sprinkle some poppy seeds on fallen snow in our gardens. It’s amazing how the poppies have germinated over the years providing us with beautiful plants and blossoms later in the season.
While on the subject of seeds, sincere thanks are in order to Renee Shepherd of Renee’s Garden Seed Company in Felton, California. Just last week, I received a complimentary packet of Gourmet Kale ‘Purple Moon’ seeds from her.
In addition, as a member of the press, I will be able to order $20 worth of complimentary packets of seeds. I can honestly say that Renee’s seeds have always performed well for me (except when the rascally squirrels got to them first).

As a member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, I recently received my free ticket to attend the 2020 Flower & Garden Show. Scheduled for March 11-15, the Show takes place at the Seaport World Trade Center. This year’s theme is “Garden Party-Celebrating Friends & Family.” For more information, be sure to visit www.BostonFlowerShow.com.
In just two more weeks Daylight Savings Time begins. Spring is just around the corner!
