A male Downy Woodpecker is pictured visiting a suet feeder, which may be hung vertically or horizontally.
Downy Woodpeckers hold the distinction of being the most common and smallest American woodpeckers.
Males have a red patch on the back of the head. Juveniles may have a wash of red, orange, or (rarely) yellow on their crown.
We are told that woodpeckers have been discovered nesting inside the walls of buildings.
So happy that our woodpecker visitors may be enjoyed looking out our kitchen window!
