Kousa Dogwood Berries – Pretty and Tasty

Kousa Dogwood Berries - Pretty and Tasty

Native to East Asia, Kousa Dogwood trees (Japanese Dogwood or Cornus Kousa) are admired not only for their beautiful flowers in the spring and early summer and their interesting bark but also for their berries.

Even their leaves “provide vibrant fall foliage,” since they will turn a beautiful deep orange-red or even purple at this time of the year.

Appearing from late summer to early fall, their berries are unique in appearance, with a rough, red exterior that resembles a miniature “lychee” tropical fruit.

More than just “a pretty face,” the small, spiky round fruits are delicious and a versatile ingredient in many recipes. Their flavor is sweet and mildly tropical, often compared to a mix of mango and melon.

Their unique taste and culinary flexibility make them desirable for sure!
