Everyone keeps talking about our recent record-setting high temperatures in the Greater Boston Area.

In fact, some restaurants served their customers outdoors, and one of our neighbors hung her wash out to dry. It was in the 70s, after all!

Of course, even as I type, the news is all about a major snowstorm headed our way.

Although there’s not much gardening going on except for our indoor plants, it’s fun to watch visitors to our birdseed and suet cages hanging on our Kousa dogwood tree.

One exciting new experience for me is that after reading that someone had success rooting a clematis cutting in water, I tried it at the end of last fall. Although it took forever, it finally happened.

Healthy looking roots are now clearly visible in the clear-glass bud vase on the windowsill over our kitchen sink. Someone suggested that the extra humidity may have influenced the success.

Of course, now I must plant the cutting in some potting soil and hope that I don’t kill it. If it works, in the future it will be a fun way to increase our clematis population outside in the garden.

My winter “flower fix” is usually via the annual Boston Flower and Garden Show at the Seaport World Trade Center. This year’s show is scheduled for March 11-15, and its theme is “Garden Party: Celebrating Friends & Family.” I’m really looking forward to it.

However, this week I got an early “flower fix” when I joined a group of Woman’s Club members on a bus trip to the new Encore Boston Harbor Resort in Everett. Although I am not interested in casino games and gambling, I had heard that the luxury resort was a flower show of sorts, featuring thousands of potted plants and floral arrangements. And I was not disappointed!

Everywhere we walked and “peeked in” we were amazed by the beauty, artwork and gardens. Even the tables at the casino’s Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop were enhanced by gorgeous petite fresh-floral arrangements.

A beautiful outdoor garden was visible from a second-story balcony. We didn’t venture outdoors to visit it because it was so windy and cold. However, we were told that come summer, the garden will be enlarged.

So, it looks like I’ll be returning!
