Favorite Plants - Daylilies

Posted by Judy in VA

Daylilies are the main flowers in my gardens, primarily because they are so easy.

Daylilies grow in clumps. Their roots are tightly meshed, small tuber-like roots. The leaves are long, thin, and blade like. The flowers come in all colors except blue and a true white. The plant sends up a tall stalk, called a scape, with the buds at the top. Each bud opens to a flower that lasts one day, but scapes can have many buds and each clump can have many scapes. Here they are planted in full sun to light shade.

Once established, they need little care. This summer was a drought for us and I did water some of my favorites, but all survived without damage. I have daylilies that start blooming in May and stop near the end of August....

Prices can range from $5.00 to several $100 for newer cultivars. For example, 'Lisa Ann' costs around $14 - $15 and 'Lisa My Joy' is $100! 'Thomas Edison' is around $5 and 'Thomas Lee Memorial' is over $100. I don't have any of the $$$$ ones! :)

With thanks to 'Judy in VA' for sharing.
